Of particular note are papers relating to the Board of Trade and Sir William Blathwayt; letterbooks of George Macartney while Governor of the Caribbean Islands; English and Italian genealogical material; papers of Jean Louis Berlandier relating to his surveys of the U.S.-Mexican border and to his various explorations in Mexico, Lower California, and Texas; English court records and reports; and miscellaneous papers of various colonies in British North America.

English antiquary and collector. He began collecting while at Rugby School and Oxford. On inheriting his father's estate at Middle Hill in Worcestershire, Phillipps embarked on a career of collecting manuscripts and books. His collection of manuscripts eventually numbered over 60,000 items. A member of an old Scots-Irish family, Macartney studied at Trinity College (M.A., 1759) in Dublin. He was knighted and appointed envoy extraordinary to Russia in 1764 and, on his return, entered Parliament, becoming chief secretary for Ireland (1769-72). Berlandier (1805-1851) was born in France and at a young age went to Geneva where he became an apprentice in a drug firm. He studied under the botanist Alphonse de Candolle; in 1826 he went to Mexico to collect plants under the sponsorship of de Candolle. Several published works based on this research appeared between 1832 and 1850. Berlandier also established himself as a pharmacist and doctor in Matamoros, Mexico.
